Updated: Jul 17, 2020
Who would say no to a bedside snack during those long night feeds? Now what if i told you they'll also help to boost your milk supply!? Well say hello to lactation cookies!
Aren't lactation cookies a load of rubbish? NO! lactation cookies are full of galactagogues! Galactagogues help increase milk supply. They are found in synthetic medications, but also in natural foods such as oatmeal, fennel, goats rue, blessed thistle, fenugreek and brewers yeast.
The great thing about lactation cookies is that you can experiment with different ingredients to make them the perfect cookie for you; however keep in mind there is one vital ingredient: brewers yeast.
below you'll find my favourite recipe
2 tbsp brewers yeast
3/4 cup of brown sugar
1/2 cup coconut oil
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 tbsp cinnamon
1/2 tbsp salt
1 1/2 cup rolled oats
2 tbsp milled flaxseed
1/2 cup chopped almonds
preheat oven to 350 F
in mixing bowl, mix the sugar and coconut oil until soft. add egg and mix.
combine the milled flaxseed and water in a separate bowl. once mixed add to sugar and coconut oil
add flour, brewers yeast, cinnamon and salt and mix again.
by hand, mix oats and chopped almonds then add to the rest of the ingredients
scoop out the batter onto a baking tray lined with parchment paper. flatten the mixture slightly
bake for 12-14 minutes
Your cookies will last up to one week in an air tight container
Other ways to up your milk supply
Feed during the night. Your body produces the most milk during the night/early morning.
Power pump. Power pumping mimics cluster feeding.
Nurse/pump often. This will signal to your body that it needs to make more milk.
Skin to skin! Hold baby as much as possible, especially whilst pumping.
